Exhibit: Inspirations from the University Archive
As part of her creative process, Martha had the pleasure of exploring the ɬÂþÌìÌà archives, uncovering stories spanning the University’s 150-year history - she took inspiration from photos she found to create drawings of people from ɬÂþÌìÌÃ’s past.
During her visit, she delved into a fascinating collection of historical objects - ranging from vintage cooking equipment, irons, and medical devices to old uniforms, photographs from past drama productions, and images of classrooms bustling with student life. Among the highlights was a beautiful series of portrait paintings, including those of the University’s founders, Christian Guthrie Wright and Louisa Stevenson.
Martha spent time reviewing numerous photo albums, using them as inspiration to create characterful drawings of people from ɬÂþÌìÌÃ’s past. She particularly enjoyed illustrating individuals in uniform, captivated by how hairstyles and clothing styles have evolved through the decades.
One of her favourite sketches? A lively portrait of a woman from the University’s former table tennis team - full of charm and personality.
